Hi,
I have decided to buy a DVD burner. The main purpose being backup and also for making dvd's of our photos we can play on the telly/dvd player.
There seems so many different types speeds etc and not being the most up to the minute would appreciate a little advice.
What format of burner do I need
What is dual layer
What speed do I need
As this needs to be an external drive am I better off buying an all in one or one of these IDE case thingys and an internal type drive?
Anything else I should be thinking about!!
Cheers
Gary

Hi,
Most of the best known makes (NEC/Pioneer etc) now come with all the main formats built in, i.e -r,+r and dual layer. Dual layer means exactly what it says, you can put 2 times the amount on a disc. Your drive must obviously be dual layer and use a dual layer disc. These discs are quite pricey, so if it's only photos etc, stick with the basic -r or +r. A decent drive will cost you max of £40 including p+p. I've had 2, one Pioneer and currently use a NEC. Can recommend both and http://www.svp.co.uk/ http://www.burn-media.co.uk/ and http://www.diskdepot.co.uk/acatalog/special_offers.html are among the best for service, price and delivery. If you buy an internal drive you can easily buy a case for it and turn it into an external drive. Ebay etc stock them for about £10-£15.Good luck,
