It doesn't appear to give me the option to start it in safe mode.

have you tried starting it in safe mode?
    do you know how?

I think some people have forgotten that not everyone knows they can bring up options when loading... Press F8 on your keyboard when you turn it on, and fingers crossed you should get a list of options... safe mode is one of them..

maybe you can get in there, get the work you've done today backed up, and then re install windows onto it...

It won't start in safe mode if it can't start the OS.

Get yourself a boot disk to boot from and see what you can salvage from the disk, or correct it once booted up.

Are you able to enter the BIOS at all?

Do you have access to the internet at all? On another computer?

And if you do are you able to download the Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ? If you can burn the iso image to a disk.

Depending on how old the laptop is you should be able to change the boot order so you can boot from the Live CD. If it boots and you can access your hard drive not only will this rule out a hardware problem but you will also be able to copy any files not backed up on to a pendrive.

Once this is down try re-installing xp acers web site should have all the drivers you need.
