Ok so probably not the technical name for it, but my mates laptop (which is running XP) seems to have got a virus.
Whenever you search with google and click on any of the links which your search brings up you get redirected to some dodgy sites trying to sell you stuff.
We've tried Spybot search and destroy, adware 2008 and ccleaner registry cleaner, its got rid of some probelms but google still keeps redirecting.
Anyone got any advice on how to get rid of this virus.

I think you will probably have to post a Hijack This log too0 -
Before doing the full-blown anti-spyware hunt, have you checked what Browser Helper Objects are installed?
In IE, you should be able to go to Tools, Manage Add-ons... and see what's currently loaded.
I've got a recent XP install, and it shows only 2 - one for AVG Safe Search and the other for Adobe PDF reader. If there are others you don't recognise you can temporarily disable them and see what effect it has.0 -
@fwor ... yes, this may help but the problem is that, if the computer has been infected with one virus, it may well have others. Some may be hidden more deply than others and a "full-blown anti-spyware hunt" would be a good idea to try and fix what UXBs are be lurking beneath the surface.0
