£5 Coin

Hi, this might sound like a daft question but is a big £5 coin legal tender. ie would a shop accept it?

My son found one covered in mud earlier while he was out playing. He wanted to know if he can spend it?

I know there were collectible £5 coins brought out but i've never saw anyone ever using one in a shop etc.

It says on the back 1926 VIVAT REGINA 2006

If you have trouble spending it in a shop though then just take it into a bank and get it exchanged for more recogniseable money ;)

Yes i'll give him a fiver and put the coin into my account.

Just didn't want the guy who owns the Corner shop being iffy with my son if he tried to spend it.

    It's definitely legal tender.

My son's had one in his bank for about 5 years lol. Very rare to get one.

God this reminds me of when I was hungry and had no change in the house so I hunted about and eventually came across a £5 coin I ordered when they were first introduced.

I headed down to Greggs and although she gave both the coin and me a strange look she accepted it.

I did feel a bit embarassed thinking she knows I am only using this cos I am skint but I soon got over that when munching into my purchase.:D

Am I the only one thinking this? Surely when you deposit money into the bank they don't give you it back in the exact denominations? Unless you meant a safety deposit box type?

No No, I think you will find it works like this.

When you make a deposit ,they take your money and put it in a shoe box with your name and account number on it.

Thats why when you try to make a withdrawal they look down under the counter. It looks like a computer but they are actually looking how much you have in your shoebox.
