Just been through my first year of university and boy was it hard work. My tutor emailed me at around the end of june advising me that I passed all the modules and I could progress into year 2. About a week later, I received a letter from admissions advising the same, that I had passed and could enrol onto level 2. Now, today I have received a breakdown of my results. To complete my year, I need 120 credits but adding them up I only have 110 because I failed one module. I dont know if i will need to resit this exam or what because I cant get in touch with my tutors til monday and its really eating me up. Was looking forward to this weekend but now I just want it finished.
Has this happened to anyone before? If yes, what did you do?
Any advice appreciated!

You only need 100 credits to proceed to the next level as long as you didn't fail a core module. In your 2nd and 3rd year you need to get 120 credits per year in order to get an honours degree. If you only get 100 credits in your 2nd and 3rd year then you a degree rather than an honours degree. So don't worry about failing one module, you're in your first year so it doesn't count towards your final degree so there's probably no point in resiting. Talk it through with your tutor though but don't stress.Mortgage-free wannabe 2026 £1130/40000

That will be university dependent because at my uni its 90 credits you need to progress into the second year. Plus also although the first year doesn't count you still need to get 120 credits in the first year to get an honours degree in the end. If you only have the 90 credits needed to progress into second year you won't get an honours degree even if you do well in the second and third years.
Its best just talking to your tutor and read your handbook as that will explain how credits work at your university.0 -
Yes, it will be university specific. First year grades do not count towards your degree at my uni but you have to pass every module to progress.
Contact the tutor again and ask for clarification. If they are 'out of office' contact registry services at your uni as they should be able to tell you as well.
Or, saying that, this information should be available to you somewhere. It is on the website for my uni and also in the course handbook (or CD) we were given at the start of the course. Have you checked either of these?0 -
It will be course specific too as at my uni some courses you can progrees with failed units but on mine (social work) you have to pass every unit to progress and get one resit chance.
I feel for you I know what its like having things hanging and not being able to contact anyone at uni to clarify.
Sur eif they have said you passed you have though

Every univeristy must be different. At my university you had to pass 100 credits to progress. As for hounours degrees you are normally expected to have 360 credits but you only need a minimum of 300 credits with 100 credits in each year. However you really want to get 120 credits in your 2nd and 3rd year as otherwise it drags your classification down. Unless I've read the handbook incorrectly! So the best advice is to look at your own university handbook and talk to your tutor.Mortgage-free wannabe 2026 £1130/40000

celebrating with a dvd and a bottle of wine due to havin the company of my 3yr old son. just had a reply from my tutor who advised that i have passed the year. My marks from the other modules compensated my poor mark in the exam. am alot calmer now knowing that i have passed. just fingers crossed now for years 2 and 3!
thanks for all the advice, x x0 -
Was about to suggest

If it says CP next to a module thats below 40% (but above 30%)
Its a compensated pass, and is made up for by the other modules
