Barclaycard simplicity

Has anyone with one of the higher rate barclaycards managed to change to a simplicity card?
We have a barclaycard gold account that we've had forever, there is a limit of £10350 on it - we hardly use it and tend to pay it off in full most months but the rate has slowly crept up to 17.9% from around 12% a few years ago.
On the Bc site it has a bit that says existing customers apply and then when you click it tells you you can't have that card but there are (higher rate  ) cards that you can change to.
If they won't play ball and we close the account - are they likely to give us a simplicity card in a few months ? If so , how long should we wait to apply for one?

Barclaycard operates a rate-for-risk policy. It has a range of credit cards and the one you're offered depends on your credit score. In the worst cases you can apply for a card, then be sent a totally different one, thus leaving you with a wasted search on your credit file.
In addition, Barclaycard has become rather stringent with available credit. Currently, this lender turns away some 50% of applicants and credit limits tend to be lowish so, if I were you, I would hang on to what you have at the mo. After all, if you only spend what you can afford to pay back each month, your standard rate is of no importance.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
I would agree with the low limit thing - I recently applied for a Barclaycard, and they give me a limit of £260. That is the lowest credit limit I have EVER had. Even my credit card when I was at university had a higher limit than that! The credit crunch is hitting.
If you are looking for a low APR card, might be worth looking at what is available generally, not just from barclays. There is a useful search on the moneysupermarket website where it ranks cards that would match to different credit ratings (excellent, good, average etc) as well.Indecision is the key to flexibility
