MBNA Website or is it?

Hi,

I was wanting to register online with MBNA. I entered directly the website address and I've searched google but everytime I click on the MBNA site it changes address to wwwa.mbna.co.uk (note 'a' added in address) Can anyone tell me if this is correct?
I tried to phone MBNA but found them to be unhelpful. They say www.mbna.co.uk is there website not wwwa.mbna.co.uk and not to use the site. They tried to blame this computer saying there nothing wrong with their site but I've tried it on other computers and they all do the same.

Help!

Hi.. you are right it is forwarding to the wwwa address... strange. However, the fact that it's the genuine www.mbna.co.uk site that is forwarding I think all is fine. Similarly, trying to log in via wwwa.mbna.co.uk (after forwarding from the www. address) works find and shows my account. Therefore the wwwa site still has correct links to the MBNA database and similarly the SSL certificate is ok.

All in all... looks fine to me!

Aargh! Quite worrying, as I have just logged onto MBNA.com and I never noticed. However, as it auto-forwards to their secure site (https) I'm hoping this has something to do with it. Also after logging in all my personal and account details were correct - if someone had cloned this website and were just phishing for passwords etc they wouldn't already know this would they?
All in all, I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm not over-concerned at the moment.

You've got me paranoid now. So I just called MBNA and the nice lady on the other end of the phone told me its totally natural and always does that and not to worry.

    Phew!

FYI (if it helps), www and wwwa are the server names and mbna.co.uk is the registered domain name. If the DNS system works how it's intended, it shouldn't be possible for someone who isn't a registered administrator of mbna.co.uk to set up a server on that domain. Of course, it's always possible for an IT person within the company to set up his own "corporate" server if he wants to...
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...
  • Following on methusala's post that www.bankcardservices.co.uk links to the MBNA website, here's another one that's also a mirror MBNA site:

    www.mbnanetaccess.co.uk

While there’s no problem here, that’s not a very good general assumption. Please read Man-in-the-Middle Attacks from Schneier on Security. So that you remain unaware that your security is being compromised, the ‘man in the middle’ might pass back the pages from your bank, just as if he were not there. If your browser ever gives you a warning about the security certificate for a website, you must not carry on and access that website.
If the DNS system works how it's intended, it shouldn't be possible for someone who isn't a registered administrator of mbna.co.uk to set up a server on that domain.
A subzone could be delegated to another party. However, that party would be one that is trusted by MBNA.

Finally, I would agree it’s strange, if only because it’s far more common to use numbers, e.g. www1., www2., etc. Although, online banks use all sorts of different names for their secure servers. Nationwide have olb2.nationet.com. Presumably, if they have a completely separate redundant system it would be called olb1 or olb3. The Co-operative Bank use a number of different names of the form welcomeX.co-operativebank.co.uk, where X is a one or two digit number.

  • Got this from the horse's mouth today: the MBNA website is on 2 different servers - wwwa.mbna.co.uk and wwwn.mbna.co.uk

This means if you type in www.mbna.co.uk the top address field will default to either wwwa or wwwn.
Both sites are genuine and secure.

Mirror sites (also genuine and secure) are:
    www.bankcardservices.co.uk
    www.mbnanetaccess.co.uk
