My good old Acer aspire 5000 laptop has recently decided to take 15 minutes to start up and allow me access to the internet.Trouble started after an automatic download took a dislike to my zone alarm free software. The offending patch was removed and computer restored to a previous date but to no avail. Virtual memory has shown up as low. Tried disc clean up.
There also appears to be a reduced capicity from the local network connection in Helens Bay.
Any suggestions before i have to reload factory setting discs:eek: or drop kick offending laptop into the irish sea.
Many thanks

1st goto your control panel : add remove programs : remove any old programs not used and watch for any new one and remove
2nd In your run box type " msconfig " this will take you to system config utility : click on startup then open ie or firebox to access the net and go to http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php : if you check the programs which are ticked at this site, it will tell you if they are needed in your startup or not, don't worry all programs are still there they just don't load up on boot up : restart
3rd go to your ie tool bar @ tools go to options and delete history etc : get a registry cleaner and run it : these can be found free on the web : use disk cleaner program.
Good luck
PS it is a pain but if you backup ALL you want to keep the factory disks make it run like new But do set aside a day to do it0 -

I have heard about the zone alarm problem the way to fix it is to update zonealarm to the newer version.
Also check that you do not have disk compression on or indexing for faster searching. you can find this if you go to my computer and right click on the c:\ then go to properties, its the last 2 options at the bottom.
also i wouldnt listen to some of what don_key01 is saying, free programs on the web can cause problems and only add to the problem you are having.
before you download and install anything do some research about it first.0 -
I'll now move this to the techie board to see if you can get some more help
MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
