Will they back-date my repayment cover?

Hi,
Firstly, this is a little embarrassing. I've had a Halifax One card since 2005 with a little money spent on it, but not too much. I've always known exactly how much I was paying off each month, and how much I owed. For that reaason, I've *never* looked at my statement.
Silly, I know - but I speak to Halifax all the time on the telephone, so if I ever had any queries or anything I've always just asked somebody.
Anyway, cutting to the chase:
Today, for the first time I looked at my statement and to my amazement, I'm paying £15 per month repayment cover! I called Halifax to check, and yes, I've been paying it for 3 years. The girl said that, as I think I opted out of the repayment cover at the beginning (I'm fairly certain I did, I always opt out of insurance on things like that!) that I should call the insurance company on monday to find out if I can get a refund. It equates to about £540 so it would be great if I could..
I'm just wondering, what do you think my chances are? I mean, it's my fault for not looking at the statements, but at the same time if they can't find where I opted *in* to the insurance, will they be sympathetic to my claim?
Any comments appreciated, thanks
