Replace my MoBo?

Options
I have a spare MoBo for my desktop, which is a Dell Dimension 8100 getting on for 10 years old!!!

It still runs OK and over the years I've upped the RAM (512mb), replace the HD, added a second HD, added a USB 2.0 card ..... not a lot else inside. It runs XP Pro fully patched (originally supplied with W2k).

Processor is 1.50 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Should I replace the MoBo simply because "I have one"? Or wait for something to fail? I guess I'm thinking that it must getting to the point whereby something is going to give up the ghost in a big way.

One issue is the RAM - it's RIMM .... have you seen the price of that!!!

Or .... is it time to simply think of replacing it?

Any thoughts welcome, thanks

Keep the pc as it is, (if it ain't broke)

Best you can do to extend the life is every couple of month clear out the dust especially round the fans

Save up for a new PC for when it finally goes pop

I guess .... if it ain't broke, don't fix it eh? That would make sense.

Yes - I think, on balance, that buying a new PC when the time comes would be a better option, especially given the price of RIMM - when you can find it (Crucial don't have it!).

I think I might have been feeling a little attached to this old monster but, in practice, it's only the HD that is of any "value".

    Thanks :)

have to ask, why is the hdd any value?, really it is the thing most likely to fail so make sure you have backups,, at the age of that you are living on borrowed time ;)

RIMM is expensive because, if I recall, it was only specific to intel processors and even though it outperformed the comptetiton it was limited to the platform it could run on and never acheived the saturation in the market to make it affordable. Ebay is usually a good place to snap up a bargain for it, but overall I'd say it's pouring money down the drain that could be spend on an upgrade to current technology where you can get a CPU/Processor/RAM bundled for about £120 that will give you a massive performance gain over your set up.
