Is it a particular company you want? Companies House have free basic info on registered companies, https://www.companieshouse.co.uk. On their homepage right hand side - click on 'free company information' below the yellow 'Webcheck' tag.

Local Reference library too they will hold a lot of information such as Kelly Directories, Key Note Reports etc. Some have a dedicated Business Librarian.

  • A private limited company is a company whose liabilities are limited to the assets of the company and whose shares are not traded on the stock exchange.

    Thanks mountainofdebt :)

It seemed confusing having 2 plc's (private & public), but a lot of things confuse me ;)

A private limited company is as Mountainofdebt says.

The main reason a company becomes limited (rather than sole trader) is because the benefits of trading through a limited company is the limited liability status which protects the directors and shareholders' personal assets (they are not at risk in the event of the company winding up, i.e. creditors are paid from the company’s assets not the directors' personal assets).

I think Companies House actually hold records of all registered limited companies, even dissolved ones.
