Hi , I'm not a paint snob and I'm a bit colourblind too.... hence I don't think its worth using that brand of paint IMO , but does the tin not refer to the availability of advice sheets for every paint? Or even their website?
I don't think a reputable brand would recommend a rubbish undercoat seeing as how important preparation is for painting, do you?
I've read your post again and it seems that you have asked a question with the obvious answer -you COULD buy any good quality undercoat for exterior use and white topcoat that was available on the planet if you have the purchase money.
If you don't follow the advice on the tin and there was a problem in the future surely you can see which way the arguement will go?
I was trying to be helpful, maybe you should re-read the tin

I have had to order the paint,so it hasn't arrived, hence I cannot read the tin.The website will not doubt tel.l me to use farrow and ball undercoat.I need to get the undercoat from a shop today.
I do not want to buy farrow and ball undercoat, and am looking for someone who can tell me which paint brands are better quality for undercoat.

i personally would not touch f+b paints with a barge pole - they are over rated and over priced , and do not offer the same quality as dulux / crown etc , if they recommmend using their own u/c then do so , homebase stock their stuff

Homebase don't stock the exterior paint.
I was given the advice to buy it by a proffessional decorator. I like the flat finish of the paint. He just said buy a good quality undercoat.

For me, the better quality paints are Johnstones, & Dulux Trade.

The Paint Quality Institute suggests you look at the composition of the paint here

I would also buy from a Decorator's Merchant and not a DIY warehouse - the staff there (in the DM) would be able to advise.

I too like F&B paint - the emulsion, in particular, rarely needs more than 2 coats even on new plaster (primed, of course). But then I also apply emulsion with a brush and never a roller as I don't like the "orange peel" effect and prefer the faint, natural brush marks
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
