American Express - paying by bank transfer

Hi,
I've just tried to transfer a balance from my American Express card to a Goldfish card. The guy at Goldfish tried to transfer the balance using only my American Express card number, but his computer "didn't recognise" the card so he asked if my American Express statement had a sort code and account number that he could use to do the balance transfer.
My statement doesn't say that I can pay by bank transfer or standing order, so they don't put a sort code and account number on it, but it has a giro payment slip that appears to have a sort code (30-00-00) and account number on it. I didn't go ahead with the transfer, as I can use one of the fee-free transfer cheques that came with my Goldfish card, but does anyone know if it would have worked? Could I use these details to pay by bank transfer or standing order in future?
Regards,
Rob
