My dog has the pedigree dentastix, but in terms of dental health they are pretty useless. A marrow bone is far more effective (supervised obviously).
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

A money-saving tip on the dentasticks is that they keep for ages, so stock up when they're reduced.

My dog has the pedigree dentastix but he sometimes gets sick after eating them! Doesn't always happen but I have stopped giving them to him, and I now use this green stuff I got from the vets it's made from seaweed and you sprinkle it on their food, and it's designed to break off the plaque. It was about £11.00 tho, which I thought was very expensive, but it lasts ages!

  • I also give the seaweed stuff to my 3 dogs, I have checked their teeth and am convinced it has reduced the amount of tartar. I don't get it from my vet but find it cheaper on the internet.

Hilton Herbs do canine seaweed which is pretty much the same as plaque off, it looks much cheaper but i've not bought any yet to check the dosage to compare properly. http://www.hiltonherbs.com/canine/canine_generalhealth.cfm?cfid=32488024&cftoken=26376008

I found plaqueoff did help with the breath & tartar buildup so made brushing more effective, but i'll be trying the hilton stuff next as was too pricey long term with 2 big dogs. I also use the Logic gel which works reasonably even if brushing isn't an option. You can also get enzyme treated chews which should be more effective than a normal chew.

I think ideally a more natural diet using the raw bones to clean teeth is best and easiest. I'd like to eventually move towards that, but my dog at the moment is possesive over chews so i'm reluctant to move to bones until i've sorted that issue out.
