I was wondering whether a really well insulated fridge set to run quite cold could be run overnight on Econ 7 electricity only.
I might borrow a temperature data logger and see what happens.
I pay 4p per unit overnight, compared with around 12p during the day.

The only problem with that is that you could only open it in the middle of the night !0

hahah lmao,
but seriously, i would like to see how u get on with that, i have ofter thought of setting mine on a timer, so it doesnt come on for like 4 or 5 hours before the economy 7 kicks in.0 -
If a top loading unit is used then I see no problem with opening it in the day.Happy chappy0

Would be interesting to see your results.
Our old fridge seemed to always be cold, but suddenly the milk started to go sour really fast sometimes.(different milk from different shops were all tested all still in date).
I can only assume that it was a temperature controll problem of some sorts.
We are all out at work/school during the day so the door was only opened a few times.
It was a front opener, but like I said, it always felt cold.
We have a new fridge now and the milk if fine again.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
Might work with a freezer, Tom.
Come to think of it, my electrician brother did something similar with his fridge/freezer upright when the thermo packed up.
I'll ask when he gets back.0 -

However to put costs into perspective I have recently purchased a meter to measure usage. My under counter freezer costs me £31.27p per year (Eco7 @ 4p and 21p [where are you getting 12p day from?]), measured over 48 hours and extrapolated. Under counter fridge costs $23.43p/year measured over 52 hours. However a large fridge/freezer I have always been suspicious of as it seems to run constantly, returned £224.65p/year measured for 48 hours. Replacement being sought!si talia jungere possis sit tibi scire satis 0 -
12p is my 2nd daytime rate (21p for 1000 units).Happy chappy0
