Whatever you decide to buy, if your son wouldn't object to a pre-owned console there are excellent bargains to be had in the game shops. They sometimes come in the original box and you would be hard put to know it wasn't new. Then there is more money available for games - and again pre-owned is a good way to go if you can live without the latest releases. Personally I think that learning to live without the latest releases until you can afford to buy them with your own money is a good discipline!

However, they are not backwards compatible as are the x box and ps2.

The game cube will cease producing games when it releases it's next generation console, as did sega with their saturn and dreamcast and atari with its jaguar.

As for the retro argument i love playing my old C64 and nintendo. However, i can't see kids wanting to play gamecubes in a few years time when all their mates are playing on PS4 and 5's!!

I have an old playstation stuffed in a cupboard which i never touch, but i can still play the games on my ps2, you cannot do that with the gamecube.

The Xbox is backwards compatible with?

The xbox 360 is due out next month your point being they wont make xbox games next month?

As with anything to do with technology, things move on but why do you ahve to be so negative about something you seem to have such a biased slant on.

woohoo you have a ps2 !! I bet you dont even play any of the ps 'classics' you seem to know so much about... You cant see kids wanting to play all time classic such as the zelda games, any of the mario games, Monkey ball animal crossing, pokemon. My god are you sure you know what you are talking about?

Sorry I dont mean to be argumentative but to say kids will be bullied at school over it is simply wrong!

the xbox will be backwards compatible with the new xbox 360, hence the xbox will have longevity, like the PS3, PS2 and PSX.

I do prefer these 2 consoles over the gamecube as nintendo will stop making the games when it releases it's next gen console.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've decided I'm going to buy him a gamecube - hopefully second hand from "Game". I went in there over the weekend and they have pre-used gamecubes in boxes with a 3 month guarantee. I can always get second hand games for it as and when they stop making new ones.

Then in a couple of years time, I'll look at getting him another console. If I've only shelled out £35, then I don't mind upgrading in a few years time.

Thanks for all your advice - I really didn't mean to cause an argument!

FWIW that sounds like a really good plan. We have two pre-owned gamecubes in the house and have never had any problems with either, nor with pre-owned games.

Yes my son is pokemon mad & has a gamecube & his dream game is pokemon colleseum on gamecube as it can link up with his gameboy sp. So i recommend this
  • I think that's a good plan. And I think you'll find that the next gen Nintendo console will be backwards compatible, so hold on to the games you think you'll like to play again.

This from the official Nintendo website (backwards compatibility mentioned in 3rd paragraph):

i got a gamecube as someone at work was selling it off cheap with loads of games, i played it for ages but now sadly it gathers dust ( as does my ps2).

the advantage of an x box or ps2 is that they can play dvd films, so not only is it a games console but a dvd player also.

for a kid, i would go with a nintendo, they are built tougher than the other 2 and are a more simple machine so less to go wrong.

consoles have always been a touchy subject, it goes back to the " my spectrum 48k is better than your commadore 16".

i wouldnt spend 100 quid on a 7 year old for a games console, that would leave either a 2nd hand ps2/x box or new game cube.

and i think Ivrytwr3 was just pulling peoples legs with the bullied thing, it is just not as popular as the other 2 and doesnt have all the latest franchised games.

    but mario games are fun.
