Cheapest way to go wireless - ADSL.

I've recently got BT broadband and run 2 laptops that I connect by Ethernet through the BT Voyager 205 that came with the package.

Both laptops have wireless built in and I now want to go wireless to enable internet access from anywhere in the house (a typically sized 3 bed detached, internal walls are 50/50 brick/plasterboard).

I'm happy to continue plugging peripherals directly into the laptops and don't want a server or wired arrangement. I've no requirement to connect the laptops together, I just want broadband to be accessible wirelessly.

So what is the cheapest, reliable way to do this?

Will I get away with a wireless access point plugged into my existing modem or is it worth replacing it with a new wireless ADSL router modem? What are the best buys around at the moment.

Thanks,
Jim.

  • Cheapest way is just to get a wireless access point plugged into your existing modem. It is less hassle to setup and will work straight away.
They only thing you'll need to setup is wireless security, but you can do this from your browser once your network is up and running.
Try microdirect.co.uk, scan.co.uk or ebuyer for the wireless access point.
If you're feeling down, you must be holding a duck.

  • Apparently you can connect a wireless access point to this modem. See here. This Linksys WAP for £22.54 or the even cheaper 2.2 version (listed under Alternative Products) should do the job - read the specs and comments on both for more information.

its just a usb adapter, you can share your internet on Your PC or Laptop with a bluetooth enabled device like a mobile phone, no good for a wireless network on its own
