Kefalonia holiday, hoping to visit Athens...?

Hello all,
We are hoping to take a package holiday to Kefalonia. Not content with just a beach holiday, we are hoping to take a trip to Athens for a few days to explore. We are fine to sort this out ourselves but was wondering if anyone has done this easily?
Once you have crossed to mainline Greece (are there regular crossings on the sea?) I am hoping there is public transort to get to Athens?
Does anyone have experience of doing such a thing from Kefalonia or any of the Greek islands?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Nicola

It looks like a long journey
Ferry to Patros ( 3 hours)
coach to Athens ( 3 hours)
Definately not a day trip.0 -
Unless you want to overnight it, then ferry/land links will be a tall order, as simes points out.
An alternative is flying - there are regular flights operated by Olympic to Athens. A quick look at their website shows a flight leaving various days of the week around 7am with a return flight at around 9pm. The flights are around E70 each way + taxes. However matching up a day with an early arrival with a late departure could be a bit hit and miss.
There may be other operators that fly this route, eg Aegean which may be worth trying.
It takes around 1 hour to get from the airport to the city centre - public transport around Athens and to/from the airport is excellent, frequent and cheap.0 -
Remember that public transport on Kefalonia is minimal: a taxi to/from the airport can cost as much as a flight! All in all, a trip to Athens from Kefalonia will take up a significant proportion of your holiday time, and add on a significant proportion of the total cost of the holiday.
A better idea might be to start planning another holiday, this time to mainland Greece.0 -
just thought I'd confirm what has been said above, the public transport in athens, particularly the metro system is second to none. It starts at the airport and you can/could get all day tickets for the greater city area,Niall
2015...so far...fingers crossed
