Excel problem with adding cells

Options
I use excel to do a banking sheet. I have day bills come out, bill name, amount coming out, amounts going in and a total. My formula was something along the lines of =SUM(H1-D2+F2) starting in row 2 as amount left in bank from previous month is in cell H1. I was able to rag this along all of the rows that I needed. Now today it won't work. If I amend and amount in column D or F the H cell remains the same unless I click on the formula in the bar and hit return. But doing that only changes that cell, it doesn't change the cells automatically below it. I've tried dragging using the box that turns into a cross but that just puts the same formula in. I've tried highlighting 2cells and dragging those but just puts those amounts in every cell. I've tried copying and then paste special formula only but again it's not working.

Please please help this is hard work constantly clicking on the cells to get the correct figures.

    SUM is for adding a range of cells =SUM(A1 : A10)
    Or =SUM(A1:H1)
    Or =SUM(A1:H10)

    Should your formula be
    =H1-D2+F2
    Or =H1-SUM(D2:F2)

    As Sooler says, your formulae seem to be incorrect, but if it was working before have you checked that Autocalculate has not been switched off?
    Tools > Options > Calculation > tick Automatic.

    I did have the original sheet as =H-D+F but when it didn't work I tried searching in help and it gave examples of SUM so thought I'd try that.
    It appears that automatic was unticked. Would either of you know why? Only this is work pc and I'm only person to have access to it.

    Thanks again to you both I can now see exactly how overdrawn I will be in the next few days!

    Another workbook that you have opened may have set calculate to manual.
