Found a cheat - totally by accident!
If you are quick and accurate / lucky enough you can leap from the beginning across the grass at the first bend onto the path on the other side (the bottom of the 'z' loop, if you see what I mean). This saves you loads of time and swearing.
Did the game on my 11th try - amazing given that I usually avoid games that need a fast mouse. Seems you need to make sure that you land on the path on the other side accurately, ie, you don't touch the sides.

'Leap' with your mouse, nothing else. Haven't been back since July - maybe someone else can flesh out some more details to help you?
