getting paint off my skirting board

Options
Am currently using hot blower thing to get thick gloss paint off my lovely vistorian skirting board, its mostly working but round the shaped bit at the top of the skirting board some paint wont come off completly.. is there a paint stripper or something i could use and how safe is it and where do i get it. My intention once all the paint is off is to stain and varnish them to match the floor in adjacent room.

You can buy chemical based paint strippers in all DIY stores. We were stripping paint off Victorian spindles over the weekend and found that the heat gun was much more effective than the paint stripper (Homebase one).

However, the whole lot will need sanding properly to get a decent finish, especially if you want to stain/varnish the wood - you might end up just having to sand all of the paint off the awkward areas!

Nitromos is excellent paint stripper but use with caution.
  • Have done same job years ago, taking paint off spindles and skirting boards (ugly smelly brown base coat and 2000 quotes of white gloss). Remove most of paint with hot air gun. Find/make/use your imagination to find suitable tool shapes to scrap in tight corners, or on round surfaces etc.

Wash liberately with Nitromor (any other cheap version will not work as well) WEAR GLOVES !!! of the heavy duty type. Kitchen gloves will get eaten through.
Then use medium size wire wool and gloves to work the Nitromor inside nooks and cranies. Repeat if necessary until all the paint is gone.

Wash with White spirit to neutralise the Nitomors and sand with either very fine sandpaper or wirewool.

You might still be left with the odd speckles of old paint. As far as I am concern, it only adds to the beauty of your work. Once varnished or waxed, the old wood will look like honey.

    Bonne chance !
  • I meant to write coats and not quote sorry. :o
  • We got a Black & Decker mouse sander thing (can't remember proper name) with all the attachments for the different nook and cranny shapes. I've used a hot air gun and the Nitromors before and nothing beats the mouse sander, although I tend to start with the hot air gun get the worst off and use the sander for the stubborn awkward bits.
