birthday present for my brother

I need some help, its my brothers birthday soon (he is 37) buying a present isnt usually a problem but just after his birthday he is going travelling for a few months so i wanted to buy an appropriate present but havent a clue what to buy, he is quite young at heart and is usually pleased with anything really, problem is he is quite good at buying quirky present for the rest of the family so i want to get him something really good but obviously not something that breaks the bank- maybe something that will be usefull for wen he goes away- he is quite practical and outdoorsy so already has pen knife etc... please help... all suggestions are welcome

If you want something to do with travelling then think of things that are easy to carry.

How about a diary / notebook that he could use to write memories in. Personally this is not something I would do, but I know a lot of people do.

Or how about finding out information on each of the places he is to visit and creating a small book with unusual information in about the country and silly translated phrases that would never be any use.

Guide books and maps of the places he's travelling to.

Or something to wear on his trip like a funky going out shirt!
Here I go again on my own....

What about something like a decent travel pillow? I don't mean those U shaped ones that wrap round your neck> My friend went trekking in Nepal and took one - says she was the only one who got a decent night's sleep :) Also, very comfy when in a vehicle too. I can't find the one she has - think she got it from a proper "outdoor" shop, but I've found this :

Gives you something to think, about. Just google travel pillow and take a look.

Will he be taking a mobile phone with him? If so, you could maybe get him one of the wind up chargers. You just plug it into your phone and wind it by hand, no need for electricity. You will get piece of mind knowing he can always get help should he need it. Thye are normally about £10

My boys have insulated bum bag things which are good for keeping drinks and sandwiches cool when travelling. They have a selection of straps so you can either wear around waist or over shoulder. Lots of pockets so your passport doesn't get soggy!

And if he hasn't got a moneybelt to wear under his shirt then I'd deffo recommend one of those for extended travels.

led head torch, I'm sure you'll find a good well priced one on ebay.If he's travelling as in back packing, with a fair amount of walking get some quality socks coolmax, thorlo etc-I know this sounds like a really boring pressie, but they will get used and appreciated by his feet! good socks are fantastic, but too expensive to justify paying for yourself.
