"Sterling House" bikes...are they worth it please?

Any of the Cheapo bikes you see be it in sterling bikes, woolies, tesco's big up tv or whatever, are made by 1 of 2 major companies. They'll brand them to whatever the retailer wants, but basically they're all much of a muchness.
For me there are only 2 genuine bargains to be found in the biking world:-
1.) SECOND HAND BIKES sorry to shout, but this is really where you can score. I've seen any numbers of brilliant £600 bikes being sold 2 years old for £300 or less. Broadly speaking a bike looses half its value after as little as a year....
2.) "Last years" bikes. Like cars, the bikes designs and componentry are normally updated yearly, so bike shops will flog you last years bike (still brand new) for 10%+ off (maybe up to £100 on a £400 bike?).
Note that both of these options aren't cheap, but in my opinion would give far better value for money than a sterling \ woolies \ bid up tv bike if you plan to use the bike a reasonable amount.
A big proviso as several posters pointed out is that if its going to be left in a shed \ ignored \ stolen you may as well minimise the damage by going cheap!

If you live near a branch of Decathlon sports store try having a look at their bikes. Not as cheap as Sterling House but great quality for the extra money and not excessively priced. They usually have xmas special offers too0

Chrissies right, I did leave off a third (semi) bargain....
2 brands which consistently win awards for quality for lower prices are Claud Butler and Decathlon. The first can be found in numerous bike shops, the latter only in decathlon shops (I think there's 3 in the country...)0 -
Thanks all for helping  :T

Hi,
Has anyone bought from the S.H. Buy 1 Get 1 Free offer that appears on their web-site as of 18th Jan 06 (Buy One Get One Free - Offer 1) but they're currently offering 2 Helmets, 2 Security Locks and 2 light sets for £99.00+£15.00 Postage. Sounds a tempting buy but can anyone confirm whether or not these bikes are worth what S.H. are asking for them?.
There's a discount coupon field on their check-out page, does anyone know of any discount coupons that'd work with this particular promo?.
Thank you.itxweather0
