Gas connection charge

Hi- new to the site.
I have just been informed that the gas supply to my property is 'dead' and I need to be connected to the main supply. Other houses in my road are connected.
Does anyone know how much it will cost to be connected and who will make the connection? My house is in the North West.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

You say supply is 'dead'. Is there a gas pipe into the house? If so it may only be a new meter you need. If there is no pipe then they will need to connect you to the main, this can be expensive as it involved digging a trench from your house to the gas main etc.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi, Jack & Victoria,
I wonder if you have made any progress with this and what your experience has been since you posted this message?
We have exactly the same problem and are feeling a bit bewildered! We are in the process of buying a house (also in the North West), there is no gas meter and the supply is dead (but there does seem to be a pipe - the house has previously had a gas supply). Transco tested the system and advised that the supply is dead, and I understand that they will reconnect the house to the gas mains - they have said this will cost between £253 and £1144 and will take up to eight weeks.
We are wondering whether there will be further, hidden costs and are starting to wonder if we should continue with the house purchase at all.
If anyone has any advice, we would be very grateful!
Thanks,

Its really simple,it just sounds tricky..

Also....
If there is an existing gas service pipe entering your property it may or may not be live. Dont mess with it yourself or it could end in tears. Phone the number on the link and seek advice.
They will have access to a database which tells them if a service is live or dead and whether or not they have cut it off recently and under what circumstances.
They may sent an engineer to test/inspect it.
If its dead, there are some circumstances in which they will renew the service free of charge.
PGTs ( Public Gas Transporters) are required by law(GSMR) to disconnect gas services if they have not been used for some time.
If a new service is required and it is chargeable, then this usually involves sending out a diy survey pack, customer completes it,receives quote,ok's it,job programmed.
Note that getting a new service isnt the same as getting a new meter !
You will also have to communicate with a gas supplier to obtain a meter.
Laying of services is done with minimal disturbance.
New plastic can often be threaded up old steel services and trenchless technologies can be used.
Much of the expense is related to excavating and restoring the public highway on completion.0
