Basic Bank Account

Hi guys, wondering if you can help at all...

Me and my partner are looking at getting a basic joint current account. I currently bank with Natwest and have applied through them. However, my boyfriend has an IVA and we have been refused because of Bankruptcy.

Does anyone know of a bank that will offer a very basic joint current account even though one of us has an IVA?

Any ideas would be great,

Thanks !

Which sort of bank account did you apply for?

Also, when we applied for a bank account with Natwest, it declined which we werent suprised at, but were puzzled as to why it said Bankruptcy, which it shouldn't say that as in an IVA and not bankruprt, can anyone explain this please?

Also if we were to get a joint bank account, would the IVA on my BF name, affect me in any other way as we are now associated together in a joint bank account?

Yes. He would appear as a financial associate of you on your credit report, and so you would probably suffer the disastrous credit score an IVA gives you as much as he does.

can anyone shed any light on why when the rejection came back from natwest for bankn account did they stat because they detected bankrupty as I am in an IVA and that scares me?

The only thing that I can think of is that IVA's are often regarded as an alternative to bankruptcy and often fail ending in bankruptcy anyway.

Co-op are apparently bankrupt friendly so they will probably accept you for a basic Cashminder account whilst you are in your IVA.

Having read the thread I got digging around some other well known high street banks for restrictions in their terms and conditions.

Firstly HSBC have a range of current account options, and they offer a basic bank account which may be a possibility. Its eligibility criteria states that you must be:
    • 18 years or over?
    • have your salary/regular income paid directly into your bank account?
    • happy for us to undertake a credit register search and credit scoring
    • can you provide us with identification and proof of your address and one month's bank statements from your current bank?
Looking at the terms and conditions there is no mention of IVA restriction but you may want to dig further. Hope this is some help, if nothing more it will provide a means of comparison to other accounts available to you.
