Does anyone know the procedure for closing down a charity? Do we need an accountant and/or a solicitor?? Grateful for any advice....

You probably won't need a lawyer or a solicitor. You will need the trustees and the chariy's founding documents which will state what is to happen with the charity's assets if it closes. You may need to call an extraordinary general meeting of members (the group of people who elect the trustees).

Best thing to do is to collect all the documents and accounts, Then talk to the Charity Commission telephone help line. They will tell you the right way to do it better than any of us could.

It takes ages to close a charity down - I've had to do 5 in the past - the Charity Commissioners are the best people to get advice from as it has to be done correctly otherwise you can be in deep s***. They certainly used to issue a step y step guide so at least you know youhaven;t missed anything.

No you probably don't need a solicitor unless there are factors involved that make that advisable. Yes if you have funds I would advise using an accountant. The simplest way is to close a small charity is with zero assets.

I'm in the middle of closing down a charity at the moment. If I can give you any support along the way pm me :)
I live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.
• I would agree.. contact the Charities Commission... if you folllow their destructions, you can't do wrong...

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the Small Biz & Charity Organisers board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
