Anyone know of cheap hotels with easy access to venice. It's only for 4 nights so it doesn't have to be great.

When are you going? And how near to Venice does it have to be?
Try Treviso and Padova. Both are about 30mins from Venice by train and very very nice in their own right. Plus the prices should be a lot more sensible than some of the Venetian hotels.
Of course you could always try Mestre (the piece of mainland at the end of the causeway to Venice), but be careful as some parts are quite, industrial, to put it politely! There are some nice locations though, and I remember quite a few 'chain' hotels on the road between Mestre and Marco Polo Airport.
In Venice itself there are cheaper options too, I'd recommend http://alcampaniel.tripod.com/ having stayed there, as have my parents. It's very well located, nice and not too expensive. Very friendly owners too.0 -

Thanks. We are going in October.0 -
Try to stay in Venice if you possibly can; the city is totally different in the evenings when the day trippers have left. If you're only going for 4 days you don't want to waste over an hour a day in travelling in from somewhere else and the travelling costs will eat up the savings anyway. Buy the Rough Guide and look at its recommendations if you can't get any personal comments; you'll get the use out of it when you're there as well as in advance.
Unfortunately, I had an apartment when I was there last so can't recommend an hotel.0 -
If you're going in October then you might be able to get some cheaper hotels in Venice, as from mid-October on to Jan it's fairly quite. Excellent time of year to go though!0

 Yeah so that should obviously be "quiet" not "quite"0

We did a budget trip to Venice last January, and stayed in Hotel Corte Contarina, it was a great little hotel for the money, around £50 to £60 per night B&B when we went; although I don't know the prices for when you are going.
It was a great location with a short walk along the lagoon front to St Marks square. The room was tiny (not much bigger than the double bed it contained), but perfect for what we needed, it was clean and the staff were friendly. Also the restaurants nearby were cheaper than in the main areas.
Hope this helps
