so, what should i do now?
is it worth writing to head office?
    thanks

As DMG24 said - take it back with the credit card statement as proof of purchase. You are then entitled to an exchange or a refund

The OP has a right to choose between an exchange or refund, and was not offered that choice.

A cc statement is sufficient to fulfil the proof as purchase criteria. If the store are in any doubt, they have the facility to be able to check what the customer purchased at the relevant time.

Although most places do, not everywhere will have an epos system, particually if they're not part of a chain and privately owned.

    Hi
I would get a mini statement from your bank showing the purchase on it and armed with that (as proof of purchase) you are entitled to a refund or exchange ( whichever you prefer) under the sale of goods act
as the item was not fit for purpose if the stitching came undone after one wearing
    good luck
