You can have an esaver without having a current account, so I cannot understand why closing the latter should automatically close the former? They should simply ask you to nominate a new linked account.

If you think it's bad now, wait until Santander takes over ;)

They are regularly towards the bottom of the customer service league tables :( .

Interesting. Whilst I did encounter a frustrating menu when I called, the rest of my call went without a problem. I was asked to enter my 12 digit account number, but it had recently been changed to 8 digits and unfortunately the menu had not been updated to reflect this change so would not accept the new number! Luckily I still had my old number handy otherwise it wouldn't let me through! Whilst this was a big problem, after that I followed the menu and got through to speaking to someone with ease. I was amazed, both times, at how quickly they answered the phone. I asked to have my esaver closed and the money withdrawn into my third pary current account. This was a few thousand quid and the guy never mentioned a security call back. The account was closed there and then with no fuss. Overall, in this case, the customer service from a real person was excellent.

Just thought i'd try and balance the scales!

Yep, they now join Abbey.... right down there.

When I complained recently to Abbey, I got to see the 'New' branch manager. When asked why my letters to the manager had not been acknowledged, he explained that, for several months there had been no manager in post. So that was all right then.
He then went on to explain that Santander were so appalled at the poor state of Abbey when it took over, that they were too embarrassed to associate with it in the market place.
As an aside, some months ago, Santander were reported to be interested in buying A&L in order to broaden Abbey mortgage base.
Then Northern Rock happened, and now they have different reasons to buy A&L;) .
