Hi
Could anyone tell us what oil to put in our bmw 318 tourer? We have looked in the manual and found what to use but it does not state if it should be synthetic or mineral.

Many thanks
Caris

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829 bear in mind they will recommend their own brand, but it will give you an idea what you're after.

What is the age of the car? The andbook should say that you need an oil to meet BMW specs - usually it will saysomething like BMW LL98 or LL01.

Castrol's web site is going to recommend Edge 0W-30 (it always does for every car) but might also show a cheaper acceptable alternative.
Depends completely on the age and engine type of your BMW, what registration year and model is it (E36 1992-1998, E46 1998-2005, E91 2005+).
This is just about the most commonly asked question on the UK BMW owners forum, I can dig out a link to a complete list of oils conforming to LL98, LL01 and LL04 if you need it.

You need a BMW Long Life synthetic (not semi-synthetic) LL98 (or later, so LL01 and LL04 are good too) oil and Castrol is recommending Edge Sport 0W-40 (an LL04 oil). It's expensive but you only need change it every 15,000 to 18,000 miles in accordance with the condition based servicing indicator.

Also, if you cannot find the 0W-40 the Edge 0W-30 will do fine too.
