Leaving cash in the ATM

Hello people, a friend told me this would be a good place for advice.
I am an idiot and I withdrew £300 from an ATM outside a supermarket last night - I only realised that I'd failed to take the money from the slot when I arrived at the till to pay for my groceries. Naturally, when I went back to the ATM, the money wasn't there. Either the ATM swallowed the cash or I made the next customer's night with a free gift of £300. Is there anything I can do?
Aren't there sensors that can tell if the money has been taken? Wouldn't cameras have recorded it all? Is there a chance for me to get my money back or should I just kick myself and put it down to experience? What does the law has to say about this? Surely taking money that doesn't belong to you from an ATM is fraudulent, as is the bank keeping money that its customers have already withdrawn?

I don't know too much about this, but I know if the machine did take the money back it won't have debited your account, so you're safe there.
But if someone else tok the money, I'm not sure what you could do. There may be CCTV cameras around the ATM but even if they show the next person who came to the machine it would be difficult to trace them.
I'll have a look on the web and see if I can find anything else about it.0 -
Did u check your balance yet ?, Usually shows up as atm reversal credit, unless someone was behind you and have pocketed it !!Busy mum of 3, so if my posts don't make sense or ask a silly question be patient:rotfl:0

Yes, it was debited - I checked this morning.
It's a busy ATM, so no doubt someone took it - but surely they'll have a record of who took it?0 -
I've had a quick look online and it depends on the cash machine, but it sounds like most money will be sucked back into the machine after fifteen seconds if it isn't picked up.
Was there a queue behind you? If not, there's a good(ish) chance your money was credited back to your bank account.0 -
Phone your bank, inform them of what happened. You will get your money back if it was 'sucked' back in (happened by accident to me) but it's unlikely if it was taken by a stranger.0

Oops - posted that before I read your latest.
If that's the case, I'm not sure what you could do. There are maybe other people on here that know more about it than I do. Good luck!0 -

If I were going to nick money from a cash machine I certainly wouldn't be putting my card in afterwards. Any passerby could have swiped it without even looking at the camera.
Sorry, think you may be out of pocket.OD Girls On TourBarcelona 2008 - Dublin 20090 -

You need to report it to your bank, with as much detail as possible about where the ATM was, when it happened etc, just in case the money got sucked in but wasn't re-credited to your account. It probably won't help, but for £300, it is worth the effort!0

have you checked at the local police station that no-one has handed it in. Not everyone is a crook, you know. The woman in front of me last week at an ATM in London left her money in the machine and i chased after her to give it back0
