iTunes and Quicktime installation problem

Hi
I have just bought an iPod Touch. I downloaded iTunes and Quicktime on to my computer on Tuesday (my OS is windows XP). iTunes installed ok but Quicktime didn't. I went back to the Apple site and downloaded Quicktime again. This time it successfully installed. I puchased music and imported files now problem everything ok. Yesterday I got my iPod, attached it to my computer and got the message "this iPod cannot work because the required software is not installed. Please unintall iTunes and install again".
I have in the past had iTunes and Quicktime installed on my PC but removed them via add/remove software programme. I have windows uninstaller and can see neither application in there once I have successfully removed them.
I have installed and uninstalled 5 times now and followed the advice on the Apple website but still cannot connect my iPod. The only things I haven't done are empty my temporary directory (because I kept getting messages that items could not be deleted), disabled conflicting system services and start up items and deleted corrupt or incorrect registry keys because frankly all that is way above my head.
Does anyone know if there is someway I can resolve this issue or given what I have tried is it best to get an expert in? If it's any help at all I have to hard drives installed on my PC - C & F - is there any way I can install iTunes and Quicktime on the other drive without the current problems I have?
Sorry it's so longwinded.
Thanks
Ali

Don't know if you've tried this but if not, follow these instructions exactly to completely remove iTunes and QuickTime:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925?viewlocale=en_US
And then try downloading and installing iTunes again. Remove all the components (iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, etc) before trying to install iTunes.0 -
Hi Marty
Thanks for your reply. I will give it a go (again). I have checked my add/remove software programme and see that the Apple Mobile Support Device is not there. I ran a diagnostic and this confirmed it was missing. I guess this is the root of the problem because I have followed everything else to the letter.0 -
That should be installed along with iTunes. Apple recommend the steps I outlined above in order to reinstall Apple Mobile Support, so give it a go and see what happens.0

You don't need quicktime for anything, why not just not install it.0
-
You have to have quicktime because a message pops up that iTunes cannot be accessed without it.0

Well, I'm just about beat. I've done everything the link said in terms of removing and reinstalling iTunes and Quicktime. Now I go through the process to install, get a message that says iTunes and Quicktime have successfully installed but it's not on my system. It's not showing in the control panel, not when I press ctrl, alt, delete or showing in the programme files on the c: drive. I'm at my wits end!
So any offers on whether I should try loading it on my back up F: hard drive?0 -
you dont have the kazaa codec pack installed do you?0
-
No I don't think so. I did flirt with Kazaa a few years ago but removed it.0

does the ipod get detected on connection over usb?0
-
It's detected by my computer (XP OS) but not by iTunes0
