Geneva Airport overlaps the French-Swiss border and has an exit that takes you directly into France.
You may find it cheaper to stay on the French side, in a town called Ferney Voltaire. This is a very short taxi ride from the airport. I stayed at the Citadines Aparthotel a few years ago. It was cheap (cheaper than Swiss prices anyway) then but I have no idea of the pricing now.
When I was there, the border was at the top of an escalator. I believe you're only allowed to use that crossing if you're travelling that day. I showed my boarding pass (ticketless airline) and had no problems.
Loads of locals work in Switzerland and live in France to take advantage of the lower cost of living. The only drawback I can think of is that you need to have both Swiss Francs and Euros.
It's about five years since I've been so do your research before acting on my advice!0 -
There are a number of cheap hotels in Ferney Voltaire on the French side as Welliesorter has mentioned.
Alternatively there are quite a few hotels withing walking distance of the airport but the cost will no doubt be higher. You could always consider making the short trip into town, there are many hotels around the main station - not the best area but undoubtedtly cheaper than the larger chain places around the airport plus you'd have some more options for your evening if thats what you are after.
Just before you leave the baggage hall there is a machine that will give you a ticket for free travel on public transport for 80 mins. The airport connects to a train staion and ALL trains stop at Cornavin (main station), less than 5 minutes from the airport.
Hope that helps.0 -
When we have needed a budget place to overnight in Geneva we have stayed at the Hotel St Gervais, near to the railway station (Cornavin). A very basic old inn and some rooms have shared bathroom facilities on the landing, but the rooms are very clean with fresh linens and the breakfast is quite acceptable too.

We have stayed here 3 or 4 times over the past few years with no complaints."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0
