It's amazing how many people seem to have no idea that the state pension counts as taxable income.Trying to keep it simple...

Did you actually tell the tax office when the state pension started?
Or after your first call to say you were going to get it did you receive any forms to complete?0 -
Interesting thread.....I have one or two observations....
1. At the point of receiving state pension, does your tax allowance not automatically switch from earned income/occupational pension payments to cover the state pension first, i.e. state pension £6000, tax allowance 7500, state pension becomes tax-free and balance of allowance 1500 in this example then applied to occupational/second pension??
2. when your civil service pension becomes payable at 60 (for most of us), but you are still working, does your tax alowance remain with your salary and therefore all of your cs pension get taxed as if normal income on top of your salary, or vice versa??
3. At state pension age(65), then what order of priority is applied for your tax allowance and how is it decided ??
I've got 19.5 years until this becomes an issue for me (preserved CS pension payable at 60, now working in private sector with probable retirement age of 65) and things are liable to change by then, but getting a baseline established would be useful......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Retired at 50 in 1992-tax collected from civil service pension via Capita.
Received oap pension when 60.
On reflection over the past 15 years since I retired I have never received any correspondance from tax office whatsoever. Furthermore I have no recollection of ever receiving any form of correspondance from the tax office during my 25 years as a civil servant.
All I have received is P60 from Capita showing my code number and tax deducted.
As previously stated DWP, Tax office and Civil service are all government departments.
A month ago I received a letter asking for old age pensions details as file will be forwarded for consideration of implementing ESC A19. I am awaiting a decision.0 -
Usually, when you claim your state pension at whatever age, a tax office form will appear a bit later asking for outline details of your various sources of income, pensions, savings etc. This is the point at which they adjust your tax code to take into account the state pension.
The tax office remains the one which handles your main pension payout (ie in this case it would be Capita's tax office).
One does however get the impression that the efficiency of the system left something to be desired in the past. It's possible that women returing at 60 can more easily get ignored because most people getting the state pension are men retiring at 65 and at the same time claiming the age allowance, which generates a tax code rejig anyway.
That doesn't happen for women until 5 years later - and you do need to tell them about that too, otherwise they are quite likely to leave you on the old coding.Trying to keep it simple...

Today HMRC admitted there was a tax liabality of just under £5000 on unpaid tax on the retirement pension paid over the past five years.
DECISION
The underpayments have however been remitted in full under the Official Error provisions and will NOT be collected.
I would like to thank all the contributors to this thread. My initial letter containing a copy of the Adjucitators decision (copy posted on this thread) may have been the deciding factor having set the precedent.

No problem paying what we owe.
I reached 65 recently-within a week of applying for my pension my local tax office requested details of my income-within a month, even before the pension was paid Ireceived a new code.
Sadly I was mugged by the government-not one penny of the increased age allowance was I given.
Far rather have my tax affairs in order-anyone knowingly to allow a tax burden to build up over five years could only be described as stupid.
