how can i improve wireless signal

Can anyone advise please ?
I have my PC set up wireless and my daughters laptop. However we have huge problems with the LAPTOP losing signal and speed
We got the laptop so she could do her homework and trawl the internet and are satified that she is using it correctly but unless she is right next to the modem she loses signal
Any help gratefully accepted as she wants to chat to friends online during holidays

I sthe router not blocked by any objects eg is the router at the back of a shelf behind other stuff or is it at the front of the shelf, are you able to stand the router up and have the ariel so its pointing upwards, you tried changing the channel
