207 Miles - 9 days - Sponsored walk
Hi all, Ive been receiving the money saving email for around a year now, but never got round to looking at the forum. Anyway, Looks like a cracking resourse, and so im about to put it to the test.
I am a season Ticket holder, and huge fan of Oldham Athletic (for my sins). Using this as a base, we are undertaking a sponsored walk at the beginning of August in aid of Dr Kershaws Hospice, in Oldham. Playing an integral part in the local Oldham community, the hospice provides care for the critically, and terminally ill. It also offers valuable support to the family of patients. The hospice needs to raise £1,750,000 a year just to remain open for business.
It was decided back in march that whoever OAFC drew as their first fixture of the 08/09 season, we would walk from their ground to Boundary Park. Millwall (just south of the river, London) came out of the bag, and subsequently, we will be walking the 207 miles over 9 days. There are only two of us taking part in the walk. Myself, Phill Higgins, and a good mate of mine, Andrew Durrans. Departing The New Den on Friday 1st August, and completing around 25 miles day, our route is as follows:
Friday 1st August (day 1) Millwall FC - Watford 24.3 miles
Saturday 2nd August (day 2) Watford - Hockliffe 24 miles
Sunday 3rd August (day 3) Hockliffe - Collingtree 25.6 miles
Monday 4th August (day 4) Collingtree - Foxton 26.9 miles
Tuesday 5th August(day 5)Foxton - Stanton Bardon 24.5 miles
Wednesday 6th(day 6)Stanton Bardon - Allestree 23.8 miles
Thursday 7th August(day 7)Allestree - Rowsley 24.8 miles
Friday 8th August(day 8) Rowsley - Hayfield 24.7 miles -
Saturday 9th August(Half day 9) Hayfield - Oldham 16.1 miles
We have been supported by various companies, both nationally and locally, including Tradwin ltd, www.gofixit.co.uk, Vital Products Ltd, NG Bailey and Premier Inn, who have kindly provided all our accomodation. Fans of OAFC who wish to complete a couple of miles with us along the route are also being encouraged to do so.
We will be leaving Millwall FC at approximatly 8am on the friday morning, and we are hoping we can gain a bit of media coverage, with an opportunity for photographs, etc before hand. we will have a support driver accompanying us along the route, with the use of a vehicle kindly donated by Vehicle Consultants of Chadderton.
The goal of the event is to arrive back at Boundary Park in time for the 3 oclock kick off, against Millwall, on August 9th. The Time frame is very tight, and the task is very physically demanding, as has been proven in our training. we are currently at the stage where we are walking 15 miles in 3.5 hours, and aim to be completing 25 miles before we attempt the main challenge.
