Sky and the use of 0870 - disgracefully long waiting times

I tried to get through to Sky today and was told by the automated message the wait time was 32 minutes!!

The 0800 number loophole appears to have been closed.

I did not wait in the queue - but still have no signal.

I need to complain to Sky.

My mum was widowed last month. She's trying to sort all the DD's etc that were in dad's name to hers - one of which is Sky. The bank has apparently notified them. She received an invoice saying she owed them the months payment of £x plus £4 for them having to raise an invoice. The month was still paid up until the next week!!

She spent 28 minutes on their 0870 number, listening to their automated blurb, before it finally gave her the option she needed - "if you want this dept, then call 0870 xxxxxx" Then it hung up on her. Flaming cheek

Ahe went out, came back later to find the signal gone. She rang back and spent 25 minutes trying to explain the situation, before someone finally listened, then another 25 minutes getting it sorted.

The best bit - they cancelled the Sky because the bank had told them the account holder had died. They assumed no-one else was at the address. However, as mum tried to explain, how could they raise an invoice for the following month's subscriptions then? AND charge her for the priviledge! They have said they can't cancel the invoice - Mum has said they had better.

So, 1 hour and 18 minutes at 0870 rates, to tell them she wanted the account in her name and to try and cancel an invoice!! I shall be trying to call them later to raise merry hell. I think the least they can do is give her reduced rates for at least 3 months.

Sorry, OP - a little off topic, but Sky stink and they must be making a fortune out of their 0870 number!!
  • Sorry to hear about the problems your mum has had. It certainly puts mine into perspective.

I have now sorted my lost signal - but I had no alternative but to go onto the 0870 number - took me 17 mins from start to finish. (I have now written down the solution).

There must be a huge amount of money saving experts out there who have - between them all - experienced various technical problems with Sky equipment.

I propose we start a forum on MSE dedicated to our own version of Sky technical support.

People who have had a technical problem sorted over the phone with Sky could post the problem and solution and others could then try these solutions BEFORE they waste so much time and money ringing the 0870 number.

I think I will repost this elsewhere as well and see what other think.

Much as I love these forums there is a good place to visit which has already set up many, many posts giving good technical support for Sky and Sky+. They have also got posts with people's experiences of dealing with Sky.

One particular issue which has raised its ugly head recently are the problems caused by a recent software update sent by Sky which is disrupting the performance of Sky+. There is such strong opinion on the site that we have all grouped together and emailed "Watchdog" who have stated that they will now be running an item either next week, or following on how badly Sky are treating their customers. Power to the people, eh.

just stick it in the technical forum
