Firstly, when you get down the stairs, the platform signs will tell you which way is heading eastbound or westbound (or north or south) and show all stops along the line.

The overhead destination signs should tell you whent he next train is coming, & what it's final stop is.

Finally, look on the front of the tube itself, it will give a final destination.

If in doubt, ask...we're not all unfriendly!

There are also rather large maps of the route in the direction the train is going on the wall opposite the platform and the worst that can happen is you get on, find you are going the wrong way & get off at the next station

Alanrowell is right, if you do get on the train going the wrong way, you just get off the next stop and go to the other platform-they run every few minutes, so the delay will be minimal. On the trains above the seats is a map that shows you each stop, you can count your stops. I would also advise yo to make your way towards the door, just after the train leaves the stop before, as it can get packed and you are then waiting near the door to get off.

At some stations it is definitely worth looking at the front of the train, Earls Court district/circle platforms for example.
