help - can I get through this?

Hi,

I study law at uni but have had a nightmare year whereby I haven't taken my exams and missed loads of lectures for one reason or another (drink not a cause) - this happened last year too...bad luck or what?

I can't do anything about the past, what is done is done. I now need to learn practically a whole semester's worth of law to try and scrape through exams in august or else I will get booted out. I understand if they do it even if it hasn't all been my fault.

Does anyone think I can learn all that work in a month and scrape through the 40% I need to do so? Please help reassure me...I know it will be hard but I want to try.

    Well, what's the option?

I do know that if you spend your precious time on sites like this then you will not succeed. But never mind: the Open University offers some excellent law courses...

    Hi Sadstudent

Yes I think you CAN do it! After all, there must be hundreds if not thousands of students who have to do this for one reason or another, and still manage to pass.

Are there any revision guides you could get to help you plan your studying?

Also, Paul Mckenna used to have a ypnosis tape you could buy (probably on CD now) called accelerated learning or something, might be worth a shot!

Just an idea, is any of your missed work due to illness? You may be able to get a letter from your gp for them to take into consideration when they mark your work.

Good luck, I hope you can do it!
  • Thanks for the replies so far. I missed one exam through illness and have submitted information regarding this...but they can only give me so many chances to get through. Something I understand.

Appreciate what you are saying voyager about being on sites too much. I will check here now and again for replies but for the next 4-6 weeks I will be head down in lecture slides and books...I CAN get through this - with lots of work and a massive dose of luck.

Has anybody got any good notes that they have already written so that you could borrow them? Otherwise look forward to studying 24/7 for the next few weeks.
  • Just wanted to wish you good luck you will do it.

Bad luck??? Are you having a laugh?

It has nothing to do with luck - you are at the end of your second year! I'd say you'd be better of taking FULL responsibility for your actions rather than thinking luck will, or will not, get you through!

Will this year count in your overall degree classification? Because, the way you are going, you will be lucky to scrape a third!

May I suggest you speak to someone about this before you start next year, because if you haven't altered your ways in the last two years, what makes you think you will next year?

As for the exams, I agree you can do it if you knuckle down and are seriously committed. Forget luck though - if you do it, it will be down to sheer hard work!

Remember to look after yourself too as you don't want to be a physical wreck by the time you sit them!

I can't and won't list everything that has happened to me, but most people would have given up a long time ago by now. This is a repeat of my first year and won't count towards my classification.

I do accept full responsibility for my life but the things that have happened to me have been beyond my control, I can't change that. I have not missed lectures and exams through laziness, alcohol or anything remotely irresponsible...I really haven't. I could have quit but I didn't see that as the best option. In hindsight in may have been, but we all make mistakes.

Thankyou for you confidence in me being able to pass by knuckling down - the luck I referred to was the right type of questions popping up in the exam(s).

    Hi sadstudent,

    Welcome to MSE.

I studied Law at uni, and also had lots of unforeseeable events hit me over the course, so I know how you feel. What subjects are you taking this year, and where are you studying (you don't have to tell us that if you don't want to ;) )? I can't recall what I did in my first year, but I really wouldn't worry too much, the exams were not overly taxing.

One thing that helped me greatly was that I realised that the questions that come up each year tend to be very similar! The names, circumstances etc will be different, but they practically always tested the same legal principles.

I finished my degree in 2005, and after a horrific first year, came out with a good 2.1, so it is possible. Good luck, and if you need anything, give me a shout x

  • Thanks dmg24 for the welcome and offer of help.

I have public law (judicial review largely) and contract law to work my way through mainly - they are the killer modules. I have been trying to question spot a little so that I can target my work - I'm not foolish enough to think I can cover every single bit.

Contract should not be difficult to pass, it is largely common sense with a few cases thrown in for good measure. However, I would be inclined to continue revising contract even after your exam, as you really need a good grasp of it for future subjects.

I have still got my revision notes, I'm happy to send them to you if you PM me your email address. However, they will not reflect more recent developments, and they are in my own unique style, so may make no sense at all! x
