Question about studying with the Open University

Hi,

I planned on starting a business studies degree with the OU in September, but the course (Introduction to Business Studies) I wanted to start with doesn't start until November. As I really want to get under way in September I was thinking of starting a 10 point course then and starting the Intro to Business Studies (which is 30 points) in November.

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to do this and has anyone done this? Would it be difficult overlapping the courses?

Any information on this would be great!

Thanks

Kel

Why not contact the OU direct and ask them?

    Good luck

You can do the courses like that if you wish - I've done it that way for the last few years , this year I'm doing one 30pt course from sept and another from Feb.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    Hi Kel

It's perfectly possible to overlap courses, I'm doing a 30 point course starting in September and a 60 point course starting in October. As to whether it's difficult or not, that remains to be seen but I expect it to take up a huge quantity of my time and I know I shall have to put in about 32 hours a week.

The 10 point courses can be done in as little time as you need, I think they 'finish' at 16 weeks, but you can do it quicker if you want to. They're supposed to be really good courses with heaps of tutor support to get you used to the workload and the type of work needed.

Good luck with your studies :)

60 point courses are considered the "norm" for someone studying part time and working. Doing courses that add up to fewer points isn't likely to present a problem in terms of workload, although the funding for the short courses is rather different.

Another option if you want to get started soon would be to buy the course material on ebay or universitybooksearch.co.uk

Find out when your course material would be dispatched to see if its worthwhile.

You can also do some of the material online

Hey Kel, I'm starting the BS degree in Sept. I'm beginning with a 10 point openings course also. The first 10 point course that I'm doing is a Social Sciences type one. My plan is to then move onto the 30 point intro to BS module next year.

    Good luck with the course!
