Bt broadband basic

Please help me to decide. Shall I wait to subscribe to bt broadband when I buy a new computer, intend to wait for Xmas sales. If I do decide to buy now, Dell is doing some good offer, had the 5150 dimension in mind approx £600. Can anybody tell me what happens to the broadband already installed on the computer, how do I transfer it on the new one?
Also what do I need to get connected, beside the basic kit, do I need any cable? At the moment, with dial up, my modem is connected with the phone line. There is only one phone line by the computer and the main socket is downstairs. I just want to know where in the computer, the broadband modem will be connected. Indeed, this must be very stupid questions to some of you, please bear with me. Thanks.
PS At the moment, I am getting by with my 4 yrs old computer who is windows 98, and the adults kids are putting pressure on me to get broadband. I am a low user as well. The computer sometimes crashes and I thought I might treat myself for Xmas. Being an oldie, you know how reluctant it is to change instead things go wrong. I intend to go with BT, more expensive but I am happy with their service and would not know what to do in case something goes wrong with anothe provider, I will consider tiscali as well.

If you can wait a little longer then you may find that may do a deal with it being christmas and all.marylee wrote:Shall I wait to subscribe to bt broadband when I buy a new computer, intend to wait for Xmas sales
You have dial-up now so the only thing that will happen is that BT will upgrade your line to support broadband (assuming it's in your area). Can anybody tell me what happens to the broadband already installed on the computer, how do I transfer it on the new one?
BT will supply you with everything you should need which is generally a filter and the cable that goes from your phoneline to your computer. The filter is like a double telephone adapter and your broadband connection lead (looks similar to a telephone connection lead) goes in one and the telephone (if needed) can be plugged into the other one. You can then use both broadband and use the telephone at the same time. Also what do I need to get connected, beside the basic kit, do I need any cable?
The supplied cable will simply replace the existing cable and plug into your telephone socket (via the filter/adapter).There is only one phone line by the computer and the main socket is downstairs. I just want to know where in the computer, the broadband modem will be connected.
The main difference will be that your existing cable going from the the telephone line to the modem (probably built-in) will be removed and you will get another modem for broadband that connects to your computer via a USB port which will definitely be on your new computer but not sure on your old one.
To check that you have broadband in your area enter your post code on this page (centre right).0
