If a new profile has been created, you can switch back to the 'default' one from the profile manager0 -

The profile manager won't load unless firefox is completely shut down first. If you try it with Firefox running, it just creates a new firefox page
If you think firefox is completely shut down and that method still brings up the homepage, a Firefox process must be running in the background - Try restarting your computer then loading the Profile Manager0 -
It's no help to you just now, but I would suggest you get the Firefox extension called Bookmark Backup
It will optionally also back up all the other Firefox profile-type files, and it does this each time you close down Firefox, to a "day of the week" directory, so you always have Firefox config-file backups for the last seven days.
When I had to restore my hard disk from backups, I discovered just how much hard work it was to recreate my Bookmarks (over 140 of them), because those were the one thing I hadn't backed up. It took weeks to set them up again from a faint memory of what they used to be. I then heard about Bookmark Backup, and have never lost a moment's sleep since!

I found a backup files of my bookmarks a while ago when the same thing happend to me, I don't really know much about firefox but all the settings & bookmarks are in the same folder
I don't have the backup extension but there are 8 files, it looks like firefox uses "bookmarks.html" there are 8 others called bookmarks.html_bak1 ..8
rename the most recent one to bookmarks.html, you can open them in internet explorer to check them.0 -
Posted this a few days ago. Mozbackup backs up your bookmarks and will also save all your cookies and settings as well (if you want), so for instance, if you use Mozilla Password Manager for remembering the login details for sites such as this....it will restore everything to a new/formatted/upgraded PC.
It also works for Thunderbird and saves email settings, emails, newsgroups etc...
I take a backup once a week and put it on a USB stick, just in case my PC suddenly goes kaput
ps. I don't recommend using the Mozilla Password manager for banking or card details because it doesn't encrypt the information on your hard drive.0
