hey all i am attempting to apply to uni now i need to do this personal statement thingy and am looking for big words and sentances that say nice things about me so that i can stand a chance on getting on this course

"Big words" aren't as important as showing enthusiasm and dedication, plus some knowledge/understanding of your chosen subject. In fact, using too many will make you seem affected and "smaller" words may give your PS more clarity. There's nothing worse than someone thinking that certain words and phrases make them seem more intelligent - there was a letter from a student in our local newspaper this week that made very little sense; if he'd stuck to clearer, simpler language he would have made his point far more effectively.

I would write what you want to say in your 'own language first' and then deal with the finer points afterwards. That way, it will still reflect you as a person and is less likely to appear stilted.

Once you know what you want to say, either post on one of the forums above (thestudentroom is good imo) or you could even put some of your words into an online thesaurus to help you find more appropriate ones.

Just don't lose sight of yourself, as your academic abilities are evident elsewhere on the application. Your personal statement is about you as a person.
