Course Interview

Hiya :)

I have an interview on Thurs for my course (basically to meet the tutor and find out if the course is the right one/I'll keep up with the work etc) on Thursday. It's a foundation degree in Early Childhood Studies for 2 years and then hopefully 1 more year for a BA Hons.

Basially I'm cacking myself - I'm so desperate to get on and have a proper qualification - but I'm concerned that I'm going to fail it cos I don't know what to expect/do.

Has anyone else had one and can you please let me know what it was like and what was asked?! Also - I know it sounds daft but what clothing would be best? It's at the local college where I'd be studying and I don't want to go too casual but also it's 6.30 on a summer night so I don't want to go all dressed up and overheat.

Thanks :)

They're likely to ask you why you want to do the course and about your career plans, also they'll probably want to discuss your previous study and what bits of it you've particularly enjoyed. They may want to know how you're going to fulfill the work based aspects of the course and if you're already working in this area they may want to talk about it. Entry to Foundation Degrees isn't usually desperately competitive and you need to remember that they need you as much as you need a place on their course! I'd wear something smart but casual, looking as if you've made a bit of an effort whilst still being comfortable and feeling relaxed. Good luck.
  • I'll second what oldrnotwiser says..

Just be yourself, wear what you feel comfortable in. I find interviews like this are not really formal but just there to make sure the course is right for you and you are right for the course.

I'm sure you'll be fine and good luck

    Thank you very much :)

I'm excited and terrified all at the same time :D

What happens if they have a different course in mind for you after talking to you? Do you need to apply again?!

Remember that the interview is also for you to ask questions and find out if the course is really what you want. So prepare some questions and don't be afraid to ask. Apart from anything else, if you show that you have thought seriously about the course and have identified anything that worries you, you increase your chances of being accepted.

Some colleges will just transfer your application over, others may make you start from scratch.

What other course do you think they might suggest?

    Thanks :)

I'm not sure - I'm pretty sure I've picked the right one - it's got everything on it that I'd like to do and I'm hoping to get a palcement round the corner at The Children's Centre. There are some other forms of courses that are related to Pre-school teaching so I don't know if they'd recomend another or mention access courses (I'm not entirely sure what an access course is)

An Access course is designed to qualify adults for HE, rather than their having to study A levels etc. If you wanted to go straight onto a BA then this might be suggested. Entry requirements for the Foundation Degree are more flexible but if your existing qualifications are low, and/or you hadn't studied for some time, then an Access course might be appropriate. But then you'd normally expect to go straight onto the BA rather than do the Foundation degree. Good luck.
