Contents Insurance for Students

Hi everyone. I've been reading the forums for a while but this is my first post.

Basically, I'm an undergraduate without Contents insurance at the moment, and want it for when I move into my new rented house (01 Aug 2008). Can anyone recommend me some good companies which cater to students?

Endsleigh have a branch on our campus but I know that doesn't ensure that they are the best. Obviously I've got a lot of stuff that should be insured (laptop, camera, etc.) and I know I should've done it earlier!

Any advice is welcome.

  • Hi there

The best advice I can give you is "speak to your Mum"!!

Most home insurers will extend their policy to cover the contents of student diggs. This is usually the cheapest way for you to obtain cover for the following reasons:

The older you are the cheaper your insurance is
Insurers think you are less likely to claim if it's your parent's policy
Your mum may volunteer to cover the cost, making it free to you!!

I would recommend only getting your own insurance if there is no other way. If that is the case:

Get yourself a part time job
Get quotes listing your part time job as your occupation rather than "student"
Keep the part time job to pay for more beer!!

    All the best

I got my parents to check their home cover but it can really only cover me if I was still considered to be living at home (which I'm not really). Can't remember who it was but that might be an issue to consider.

I got mine from cover4students.com - was much cheaper than Endsleigh for me and I got slightly more cover for my money.

endsleigh are good as they cater for unusual circumstances with regards to the person being insured, speak to them as this is their specialty.

Again, I apologise for "advertising" my own company here if it caused offence or broke rules. Just trying to help out "joe public" who might not know where to go for this sort of thing.
