Hi all this is probably going to sound dumb especially for all those who use and live in London, but basically im heading down london way for the weekend (firday - sunday) to visit friends and will have to use the underground/subway probably quite few times over the weekend.
so this is where i need help:
- Firstly i havent got a clue now how the london tubes work now its all been segmented into different area codes ?!? I can manage NY and Boston underground but just cant do LONDON?!?!? Are there any sites that can explain which ticket for which area i will need??
-Plus the prices are ridiculously expensives compared to other tubes around the world, does anyone know if there such all inclusive tickets that cost a little more but can be used unlimited/more, or weekends tickets??

Please help as i can see myself wasting a bomb and still not making to my destination!!

Paul

Have a look at the TFL website

And get an Oyster card, this is a (pre) payment card for bus and tube travel. Price capping means you shouldn't spend too much.
    .....

  • Get yourself an oyster card when you arrive. You can get them out of vending machines (£5, you get £2 credit and can get the £3 refunded when you no longer need it) and 'charge them up' at underground stations.

The prices are capped, depending on how many zones you travel in. Have a look here: https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/entry.do

Paper tickets are stupid expensive. You can also use the oyster card on the buses

Thanks guys im just looking into the oyster card idea, does anyone know if on the oyster card you can cross line, as in you dont have to just stick to the same coloured tube

Oyster card is valid on all the tube network....tube network made up of lots of different "lines" which are different colours on the tube map just to (in theory) make life a bit easier.

So with oyster you can get on and off any tube lines all day and only be charged a max amount, so even if you go round in circles all day it won't cost the earth.

If you're trying to plan a journey from A to B, use the tfl website others have mentioned - you can put in addresses or places of interest (like museums) and it will tell you how to get there, whether it means one tube or changing tubes.
  • Perfect thread, i'm also heading across to the mainland for a visit to London next month with my daughter, I have no problem getting onto the heathrow train and getting to the centre of london, but then getting around is gonna be confusing I know as over here in Northern Ireland we dont have anything similar to the tube. Ideally I would be looking a ticket for a 12year old and an adult that would allow us to travel from, say, paddington to the london eye and just in general float around without having to pay every time. Many years ago I remember going over and we got a 3 day ticket which allowed us free reign over wherever we wanted to go (within reason) is the oyster card/ticket much the same thing? Or which ticket would you recommend for us?
    Thanks

oyster card is excellent. You top it up and then just swipe it at the start and end of your journey. It costs a lot less than paying normally (maybe the exception being if you're doing a lot of travelling in one day in which case a one day travelcard may be better). Bus trip I take sometimes (when I'm up in London) costs £2 normally or 90p on oyster, for example.

When we went to London as a family the daily family travel ticket day was the cheapest. Prices varied depending on what zones you wanted to travel to. We were staying with family in North London so were quite far out but I think it cost just over £6 a day for 3 of us for unlimited travel in chosen zones (included centre of London as we did all the tourist things).

Tubes are simple to navigate. Get a littel map from station. So easy we used to let our DD decide our route etc.

Oyster is price capped so this won't happen.

Using the tube is not complicated don't worry.
    .....

  • I'm not worried about working out the tubes, it's straightforward enough as far as I can remember, but which would you recommend then, maybe using the tube three times in a day for three days? Oyster or travelcard? Farthest would be liverpool station to London eye, rest would be maybe three or four stops apart
