Hi
I got NTL broadband on Sat and everything seemed fine ....... But now my computer seems to slow almost to a halt!!! I looked at Norton system system doctor and the CPU usage at these times was 100percent!!! what could be causing this? How can I find out what is going on???? How can I STOP it!!
Sorry to shout but it`s really beginning to hack me off having to Waite up to 5 mins for a page to load!!! Or even to shut the darn thing down with a message coming up end non responsive program.
If I did not already have sooo little hair I be pulling it out in clumps!!!

use task manager to find out what tasks are using up the CPU is probably the first port of call, could well be a dodgy install of the NTL software0

NTL is often slow. They do servicing on Monday and Tuesdays.
Do you get a box to 'enter your password'.
Don't change that click OK0 -
never had a pc slowdown due to ntl software - installed some questionable freeware from time to time which has led to the cpu usage leaping off the chart and causing a general slowdown but not ntl software or connection related. never noticed mondays and thursday being any different to the rest of the week either - you can check to see if they are digging up stuff and cutting people off in your area on the service status page on ntlworld.com
as woby_tide said you need to run the task manager (right click on an empty part of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen in xp and select task manager) and then select the processes tab. once there if you click on the cpu column heading it will order the views by cpu usage - you may have to click twice to get the highest usage items to the top.
see what is hogging the cpu during the slowdowns and post details of it on here - we can help you better then.
i am of course assuming that along with your broadband connection you have at least an AV prog running and up to date if not AV and a firewall?"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." (Mark Twain)0 -
smcicr , if this is your 1st time on Broadband , the PC slowdown might be due to NTL & it might not be.
1. it could be due to accidently browing to a adaware webiste & this ahs installed some dodgy software & this is just eating away the resources of your pc.
2. or you could have a network related virus , which caused the whole network & pc to grind o a halt.
like Woby_Tide said , i would check your task manager & verify what process/app is causing the CPU spike.
advise when you have found out & well be able to tell you what to do ...if we know

I have dell latitude laptop.the problem is when i switch it on it taked about 5 minuts to work smoothly.when i checked my task manager's process about 45 process were running, most of them were used by system.
