Should I go for fixed/capped rate or switch?

Hello,

I would like some advice from money savers on what I should do with our gas and electicity provider.

We are with N Power for both Gas and Electricity for our sins. I would like to switch to a cheaper provider but we have an issue. We moved into our house on 17th July last year and despite numerous phone calls N Power never sent us a bill for Electricity only Gas. We paid the Gas bill by direct debit every month on time. In April this year N Power got in touch with a huge Electricity bill of over £500 for the period we had lived inthe house. We called and told them that we had tried to sort this out almost a year ago and that we could pay the whole amount in one go as we couldn't afford it. They have spread the paments over the next 12 months including the amount we should use over this period on average which makes our total monthly bill £88.00 per month for Gas and Electricity.

I doubt that we can now switch providers due to the payment plan we have set up so I think the only option is to try and get the cost capped so that we can avoid the price hikes predicted this year.

I just wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar situation. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you

Jemma
