Sony laptop wont boot after vista update

Options
Hi All,

I wonder if you could help me please.

After an automatic vista download, my laptop won't boot - it switches on and goes through the motions / splash screen, then gives the option of continuing or opening in safe mode... none of the options allows it to go further - it just shuts down, starts up again and take me back to the options - neverending circle.

This happened ~ 2-3 weeks ago and I've not been able to get anywhere with it - and no-one at work / friends seem to be able to help..

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Potty

Have you got any restore disks?
  • Unfortunately no - no restore discs received with the laptop which was bought from an online retailer in Dec 08...

I was a bit surprised there were no operating system discs at the time, but did not question it..

Maybe I should now - do they always come with opsys discs (in this case Vista)

I also did not burn restore discs while the computer was working and I did not set a restore point either...

    !

In the short term, please assume I do not have restore discs -

    Any help really appreciated

Without any sort of restore media or some Vista CD's then your not going to have much luck. I would suggest a few things though.

    1. Unplug everything thats in your PC apart from Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor and Power.

    2. Try booting into safemode, if it fails at the same point everytime then try to note down at what point and then post it here.

    3. Buy (from ebay) a 3.5 - 2.5 IDE cable. then plug your laptop into a PC as a 2nd hard drive. Explore the hard drive from within windows on the 2nd PC and copy any data / files that you don't want to loose.

i thought we were only in July 2008 :p

alternatively you could try and recover your data using a linux live boot cd then format the hdd and reinstall windows

With Sony Vaio laptops you don't usually receive discs, you are advised to make your own recovery discs.

    Good luck
