Loft insulation. How much??

Hi there,

I've never posted in this forum so please be gentle.

I just moved in a new house and we'ge got quite a big loft with already a staircase installed. We are planning eventually to convert it into a bedroom with en-suite at some point in the future.

The loft has got no insulation whatsoever there's even a place where a Velux window was in then taken out and they only put some tiles on top of it so it is quite drafty and get the rest of the house cold.

I looked into insulation grant and I know that they only roll some insulation on the floor. As we are planning to do a bedroom eventually I'd rather take the sloping ceiling down, put some insulation and then put the ceiling back up again.

Would anybody know what kind of cost it would involve??
I do not know the size of the loft but basically it covers 3 double bedrooms, a single one and a bathroom so pretty big.

Thank you for your help.

  • If I were you I would take advantage of the 270mm offer for about £200 that your local authority or energy company is offering and get it done now for the coming winter, even if it is laid on the loft floor.

When you organise putting in a loft conversion (this year / next year / sometime ...........?) it will add very little to what you need to do for the conversion to take up the insulation on the floor (or leave 150mm between the joists) and to insulate the under-roof area properly to meet the Building Regs for a loft conversion.

    Thank you for that.

I think that this is what we're going to have to do because we need to sort it out before the winter.

We just thought that it would be better to do on the ceiling so it would be ready for when we are planning to convert the loft but I think you are right we'll have to apply to the building regulation and it will be more costly and we need something for this winter.
